PowerScholars celebrates 165 graduates
Old Colony YMCA, in partnership with the Brockton Public Schools and BellXcel, worked to offer a remote Power Scholars program in the City of Brockton this summer.
Power Scholars is a program that the Old Colony YMCA and Brockton Public Schools has offered in person for the past five years, and works to address the Education Achievement Gap. The program offers academic and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) support to students in the city. To ensure safety while continuing to meet the needs of our youth, BellXcel created a virtual program.
The Power Scholars program served 165 2nd–8th grade Scholars in 11 virtual classrooms led by certified teachers. Scholars were also offered enrichment classes several days a week that focused on SEL skills as well as an Expressive Arts program called PeaceLove on Fridays. Additionally, Old Colony YMCA partnered with the UMass Extension Nutrition Education program once again to offer virtual nutrition classes.
Scholars who participated in the remote learning program were given Math & ELA curriculum as well as books and family activities they were able to keep and enjoy. The Brockton Public Schools provided scholars with snacks each Friday.
We were thrilled to have over 50 scholars who had perfect attendance during the five week program! All scholars who had perfect attendance were entered into a raffle to win one of three bikes provided by the Old Colony YMCA. On August 5th, we were able to celebrate all the scholars had accomplished with a drive-through graduation celebration. The academic teachers as well as the Old Colony Y Enrichment Leaders were there to hand out diplomas, prizes, and T-shirts to all of the proud scholars.
During the graduation ceremony one scholars stated, “I’m so sad Power Scholars over. I wish it could go on all summer!”
We cannot wait to see our outcomes from the program and learn about the gains our scholars made academically!
