Back to School: Children are like Sponges

Tuesday, September 10th, 2019

Children are like sponges.

They watch and absorb knowledge, skills, and values from everything and everyone around them. We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success.

At the Y, we take a different approach to out-of-school time learning than most providers. At our 45 before and after school sites, we take academics and infuse them with character development, hands-on activities with a focus on STEM, health and wellness, and of!

That's why our child care programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical, and social development of kids. They understand the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things, and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other.

Here, we don't just extend the learning day, and we don't just offer school age programs. Instead, when you're part of a Y program, you get the whole Y. We have programs and resources in place to help with basic needs, mental health, financial assistance, and so much more.

Because of this integrated approach, our programs help kids develop trust and security while enhancing literacy, math, and science, learning new skills, encouraging lifelong friendships.

Most importantly, youth learn how to be their best selves. That makes for confident kids today, and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.

We wish parents and educators another great school year. We'll see you before and after the bell rings!

Until next time,

Kim Moran

Senior Vice President, Child Development and Protection

Staff are professional yet emotionally invested with the children in the program. The guidance, moral development, and scholastic development of the children is clearly evident in their approach.
