Workforce and Education

Resources

GED Preparation
Students receive instruction in all five academic domains of the GED curriculum. Classes are small with an average of 6-8 students per class. When students demonstrate competency, they are signed up to take the GED test at Bristol Community College.

Construction Skills Training
Students first learn about safety on the jobsite.  They learn basic skills with hand and power tools. Once they have demonstrated a good understanding of these tools, they go to work on the job site and learn all aspects of residential home construction from framing to landscaping. Students also have the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Carpenters Union if they wish to pursue a career in the field.

Student Services
Student Services is available to help students with issues that arise in their lives. Students can get help with physical and mental health issues, counseling, and court related matters.

Education Awards
Through AmeriCorps, students can earn $1,800 for college tuition and expenses by participating in service opportunities in the program.  These awards can be used at any institution of higher learning that accepts financial aid.  The award is good for seven years.

Internships
Once students complete the GED, they are eligible to pursue an internship in an area they want to pursue as a career.  These opportunities are far reaching and include: Construction and related trades; auto mechanics; veterinary; human services; cosmetology, and culinary arts among others.

Other Resources
Students also work with organizations such as The Diabetes Foundation, Community Development Recreation, People, Inc., the Fall River Housing Authority and St. Vincent's Home as part of their time in the program. Utilizing these resources helps provide the students with great possibilities for life after YouthBuild.

Alumni Opportunities
Select graduates can remain in the program for more than one year for intensive wrap-around services as they transition into the workforce or post-secondary education. As we like to say, "once in YouthBuild, always in YouthBuild."
