Q: How are clients referred and selected for the S.T.R.I.V.E. Program?
A: The DYS refers clients to the program. When a referral is made the clinical department receives information on the committed youth's criminal offenses, educational history, clinical treatment history, and many other evaluations and/or assessments that are available. Following careful review of these documents the potential clients' are interviewed and then a decision is made by the youth and the program if S.T.R.I.V.E. is an appropriate match for all parties involved.
Q: Are residents allowed to leave the program and use the community on a regular basis?
A: Residents earn the ability to use the community both under the supervision of the program staff and on their own. The amount of time they are allowed to be unsupervised in the community is determined by the resident's level, DYS caseworker, and the program administration.
Q: Are families allowed to visit the program?
A: The program has visits on Saturday and Sunday from 12pm-2pm. Additionally, the program will work with to schedule visits during the week if an approved visitor cannot visit during the weekend hours. The family members and friends allowed to visit residents must be approved by the DYS caseworker. Visits must be scheduled with the clinical department by 4pm on Friday. Once a resident is on the higher levels they may visit with family members and friends in the community as well.
Q: Are residents allowed to make phone calls daily?
A: Residents have an approved telephone list which is established by DYS caseworkers and the clinical department. Residents are allowed one 15 minute phone call on a daily basis. When residents make level 2 and higher they are given two 15 minute phone calls on a daily basis. Residents may also make daily phone calls to potential employers, DYS caseworkers, DCF social workers, attorneys, and any other necessary professional phone calls.
Q: How are residents supervised when they are in the community without program staff?
A: Residents are required to sign a pass contract before going into the community. This document explains the rules and expectations the program has for the residents while they are in the community. Furthermore, residents are required to check-in with the program via phone several times during community and home passes.
