Community Based

City Pride

The Old Colony YMCA has operated Brockton's Urban Youth Services Corps, an AmeriCorps program, since 1993.  Funded by the Massachusetts Service Alliance, CityPride consists of 20 young men and women who serve the community, full-time, Monday through Friday.  CityPride teams have focused on environmental and housing issues, renovating low-income apartments and helping with Leaps in Literacy service delivery.

Beginning in 2001, CityPride dedicated its full efforts to running the Leaps in Literacy intergenerational reading program in Brockton elementary schools.  Each CityPride Corps member receives a uniform, a stipend and the chance to earn an educational award once he or she has served 1,700 hours.  In addition, during the ten month program, Corps Members receive training in economic self-sufficiency, citizenship, and respect for cultural heritage and public health issues.
