Our History
For 100 years, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America has been the premier national youth-servicing organization, based on one-to-one relationships between adult volunteers and children living in at-risk environments. Volunteers serving as mentors and role models help youth to achieve their highest potential. Big Brothers and Big Sisters have influenced the lives of over one million children throughout thousands of communities in the United States.
Old Colony Y Big Sister Big Brother Program services 28 communities in Southeastern Massachusetts. The program as it is today has gone through many changes over the years. It originated as the Big Sister Program in the 1970s serving female matches in the southeastern Massachusetts area. It later added male mentors and mentees and became Big Sister Big Brother, with the reverse order of the traditional Big Brother Big Sister as a tip of the hat to its history. The Old Colony Y brought Big Sister Big Brother on board in 1993 and has thrived as a ever growing program of the Old Colony Y since then.
Through traditional one-to-one matching and a variety of group programs, Old Colony Y Big Sister Big Brother provides guidance and support to children ages 6-14 (16 in Brockton) primarily from single-parent families, as they develop into emotionally, educationally and socially responsible individuals. We service over 250 children through various programs annually.
