Youth Conference

Since 1990, Old Colony Y has proudly sponsored an annual Youth Conference for the purpose of bringing a diverse group of area youth together for a one-day forum to attend workshops, learn from each other, and discuss important issues.  Each year, more than 250 students from 28+ different schools and community organizations enjoy this "out of classroom" educational experience in which participating teens share their broad experiences with peers and discuss how they can make a difference with a positive impact on their future.

Old Colony YMCA
21st Annual Youth Conference

Due to the trying times youth and families are currently experiencing, the theme of this year's conference is "Overcoming Obstacles."  The conference will address issues ranging from racism and violence, to substance abuse prevention and youth leadership.  These topics are addressed in a workshop format by professionals who represent a wide range of community agencies.  The events of the day also include a keynote speaker, a community resource table fair, and lunch.

Special Guest Speaker:
Steven McDonald
NYPD Detective

A detective with the New York Police Department, Steven McDonald was questioning three youths in Central Park one hot summer day in 1986 when one of them shot him three times - a brutal attack that he narrowly survived, but which left him paralyzed from the neck down, and dependent on a tracheotomy.  He had been married less than a year, and his wife was two months pregnant.

Currently, McDonald speaks to thousands of students in schools up and down the East Coast.  Aside from recounting the harrowing events of the day that changed his life, McDonald focuses on his long road to inner and outer recovery - a remarkable journey through anguish and anger to peace that began with a decision to forgive his attacker.  In December of 2003, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly acknowledged McDonald's extraordinary contribution to the community with a surprise double promotion to Detective first grade.

Join us at the Old Colony YMCA Youth Conference to learn why Detective McDonald feels that "the only thing worse than a bullet in my spine would have been revenge."
