The Old Colony YMCA continues to pursue the building of a full service branch in Plymouth, and have been meeting with community representatives to discuss their programming needs.  We are recruiting for our Plymouth-based Capital Steering Committee, and are very excited about the opportunity to collaborate on "River Run" with A.D. Makepeace, to bring a full facility YMCA to that community.

River Run, Plymouth

In 2004, the A.D. Makepeace Company began working with the Town of Plymouth on plans for a new village off Wareham Road.  The pedestrian-friendly village will contain approximately 1,175 homes at a wide range of styles and price points, a full-service YMCA and community center, a village green, a small retail and office component for the convenience of the area, sorely needed assisted living for our elder population, and land allocated for use by the town for a school or other municipal purpose at no cost to taxpayers.

Equally important is the extraordinary land conservation opportunity this development provides.  Plymouth's innovative Transfer of Development Rights Bylaw enables the Company to place permanent conservation restrictions on some 1,600 acres of land, including valuable habitat and pristine forest.  From an ecological perspective, the proximity of this conservation land, which represents more than two thirds of the project site, to other protected property is important.   Combined, the result is 20,000 acres of nearly contiguous land in an area that environmentalists have long seen worthy of protection - all at no cost to or taxpayers.

The new village will include up to 90,000 square feet of commercial space on 400 acres of an overall project site of 1,320 acres and will be constructed over approximately 12 years. The village is designed to maximize the preservation of open space by concentrating development through higher densities than those permitted under by-right zoning.  The project will provide its own water and wastewater systems, as well as solid waste collection.
